Vanilla Ice Cream with Espresso: Affogato Recipe

Vanilla Ice Cream with Espresso Affogato is a perfect dessert! But it is one that you might only want to eat before you go out on the town rather than right before you go to bed. In Italian, Affogato means drowned, which it is in more ways than one. Not only is it your favorite ice cream drowned in freshly brewed espresso, but it is so good that other desserts will simply be drowned out compared to it. Enjoy!

WHAT INGREDIENTS YOU NEED TO MAKE Vanilla Ice Cream with Espresso AFFOGATO

  • Ice cream
  • Espresso
  • Chocolate sauce (optional)

You need to purchase some of your favorite ice cream.

I personally like to buy chocolatey flavors for my Ice Cream Affogato, but you can purchase whichever suits your fancy Vanilla Ice Cream with Espresso is a safe start. Go ahead and try something new! Hey you never know, it might turn out to be the good old way!

Just a little triple fudge delight going on up here!! You don’t have to match only Vanilla Ice Cream with Espresso.

I always want to get the latest fruity and wild flavors, but my wife always wants the one that has the most chocolate in it! I think, after much eating of Ice Cream Affogato, that she is correct.

What can I say, women are normally correct. Hopefully my wife doesn’t read this blog post, I don’t want her to know how I actually feel.

If she knows that I know she is right all the time. Well, there goes my fun for the rest of the week!

Here is where your situation might get tricky. You have to buy an espresso machine!

Yes, you could use a pour of some strong brewed coffee. But nothing really compares to the flavor, strength, and punch of that pressure brewed espresso coffee.

Espresso is far more concentrated coffee than standard brewed coffee. There may be the same amount of caffeine in a few tablespoons of espresso coffee, as there is in a whole cup of standard Joe.

How to make Vanilla Ice Cream with Espresso

Fill up your “Portafilter” with finely ground espresso coffee. Then we will want to take passed the next picture.

After you fill up your portafilter with coffee, you will use a coffee tamper to compress your espresso roast.

The way I had it described to me by a professional when I first started making espresso, is to press it with medium pressure. This is to say, don’t give it a DADDY press, don’t give it a BABY press, but DO give it a good MOMMY press. Firm, but not too firm.

The reason why you do this is so that the espresso maker can build up pressure and brew all of the grounds with a small amount of water.

Pressed espresso coffee.
Brewed espresso coffee

Begin warming up your espresso machine.

then put in your portafilter.

Turn your espresso machine to brew and watch as it begins pressure brewing your coffee. The liquid that comes out of your espresso machine is going to be thick and black, but to me it looks more like GOLD.

FINALLY! Look at the beauty, and enjoy the moment.

Pour your freshly brewed and highly concentrated shot of jitter juice, over top your ice cream. Pour in as much espresso as you want, but keep in mind espresso is very bitter on its own.

Ice cream on the other hand is very sweet as you well know. So the two will balance each other out.

Just learn how to enjoy the very bitter, and learn how to enjoy the very sweet. This will be a good way to live your life, as well as enjoy your dessert.

You now can experiment with this recipe

Top your creation off with a little bit of Hershey’s chocolate sauce and you are gonna be in a place that you won’t soon want to leave from.

Notes

This dessert here is going to have to be a dessert for a night with an early dinner. You may or may not be able to fall asleep within multiple hours of eating it, but I would guess that you won’t be able to.

I know some people that could eat this dessert and fall asleep within a matter of minutes. I also know some people that would be so jittery that they wouldn’t be able to go to sleep for 5 hours afterward.

Know your body, but don’t let that stop you from eating this most delicious treat.

Additional Time 5 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1-2 shots of pressure brewed espresso coffee
  • 2 scoops of your favorite ice cream

Instructions

  1. Heat up your espresso machine, and fill your portafilter with good espresso coffee.
  2. Scoop some ice cream into your bowl.
  3. Brew your shots of espresso.
  4. Pour your espresso over top of you ice cream.
  5. Most important step, Enjoy!

Notes

Compress your espresso coffee into your portafilter, not with a daddy press, not with a baby press, but WITH a MOMMY press. Not too hard and not too soft.

I would choose a good chocolatey flavor for your affogato! Chocolate and coffee go excellent together and will compliment each other in a quite a delightful way.

Unless you know how you will react to this highly caffeinated and sugary dessert, I would keep this as a mid day snack or treat. Eat this dessert too late at night and you might be up for longer than you expected!!!!
