If you have never heard of spiderwort (tradescantia) then here is the big day! Spiderwort is a species of plant that has a very wide range in the United States! Growing in nearly every US state that is east of the continental divide and often in abundant numbers, you should have no problem finding a ton of them!
Spiderwort has a wide range of uses! It gets its name from the leaves of the plant being applied to spider bites to reduce itching and inflammation. The plant has also been historically been used for topical pain relief (just mashing the roots and applying them to the effected area), As a laxative when consumed as a tea, relief from itching, and has even been used as a poultice for skin cancer.
Spiderwort is also an incredibly useful ornamental plant for your garden, producing blooms from spring and normally though the summer, often times I donβt even have time to pick all of the flower blooms. One fact I must add, is that the blooms appear full and plump in the morning, but wither as the day heats up. If it is a cloudy, cool day, the blooms will stay plump longer. So if you want to pick spiderwort blooms its best to do it in the morning!

HOW TO MAKE SPIDERWORT TEA
- My process of making spiderwort tea is a simple one!
- I simply place my spiderwort flowers in a mason jar and collect them from day to day until I have enough flowers to make a batch of tea or to make a batch of jelly!
- After you have picked enough flowers to make a batch of tea, go ahead and put them in your preferred brewing vessel and add hot water and allow the flowers to steep.
- Allow the flowers to steep for 3-5 minutes, or you could cold brew them overnight.
- Strain the flowers out of the tea and serve hot or over ice!
- Increasing the amount of flowers or decreasing the amount of water added will change the taste and concentration of the tea! You can adjust this to your desired flavor as time goes on.
Recipe Tips and Variations
- You may make spiderwort jelly by simply adding pectin and sugar to this mix but that is the subject of future posts!
